Palisades Post 283 was established on May 15, 1928
when a committee of five World War I veterans formed to prepare plans for
organizing a local American Legion Post. The five men were C.D. Clearwater, W.B. Johnson, F.J. Sauer, Telford Work and R.L. Stadler. By July 14 of that
same year the committee of five had a temporary charter, which became
permanent less than four months later. The permanent charter was signed by
the American Legion National Commander Paul V. McNutt on November 2nd
and by officials of the Department of California on November 12th
the same year.
Membership,
which at first included only the fifteen charter members listed on the
charter: C.D. Clearwater, W.B. Johnson, F.W. Townsend, F.J. Sasuer, H.J.
Keller, N.E. Winston, Telford Work, E.W. Michel, T.T. Corr, A.R. Smith, N.
Ninteman, J.E. Stadler, H. DuRocher, and L.W. Faubion increased to twenty
veterans by the date of the permanent charter. The new members were L.G.
Catlin, E. James, W.W. Culp, J.V. Cochran and M. DeFussi.
Initially members met in their homes and in available business offices. The
First true clubhouse was a rental property on Beverly Boulevard, which is
now Sunset Boulevard, was obtained during the tenure of the third Post
Commander R.L. Stadler who served in 1930 1931. During the 1940s, Post 283
purchased as a clubhouse a building on the site now occupied by the Sav-On
Drug Store. The present clubhouse was occupied on October 12, 1966.
Throughout its 75 year history Post 283 has continually participated in
community improvements projects, Youth programs and a strong Veteran service
program. In all these activities our Auxiliary Unit 283, to whom we are
greatly and deeply grateful, has supported us ably and fully. Together we
work toward to the future with pride and confidence.
The Auxiliary Unit 283 was chartered in February 1931 and will celebrate
its 75th anniversary in less than three years. For 72 years, this
organization has cooperated unselfishly and devoted in all our programs.
To Date our Post has grown to a membership of 725 plus Veterans.
